Stories like these, from all over the world, demonstrate the effectiveness of the GRN materials.
INDIA: One man's faith story
Katta Sai was an ardent worshiper of Kali, the Hindu goddess of death and wrath. In fear of the goddess, Katta Sai often had to lay his offerings at the temple even if his family had to go without food or money.
Frustrated with life, Katta Sai began to hate himself and joined a group of troublemakers who often disrupted church services and ridiculed Christians. One day, Katta Sai suddenly fell ill. Tests revealed he was in an advanced stage of cancer. A despairing Katta Sai knew that death was tapping at his door.
About this time, a local pastor gave Katta Sai a GRN cassette in his Telugu language. The message of Jesus healing the blind man brought so much peace to him that he invited the pastor to pray for him. Katta Sai regretted the trouble he had brought on the Christians in his village and began to cry uncontrollably. The pastor prayed with him and shared the love and forgiveness of Jesus. The Lord miraculously touched Katta Sai. He received the Lord's healing in his soul and body and was baptized. Today Katta Sai and his family are believers and boldly stand for Jesus.
Knowing that the Lord can transform people such as Katta Sai encourages us to press ahead with Project India, believing God will transform countless more lives.
ASIA: Families come to Christ
Last week we visited a simple, traditional animist people who have adopted Hinduism into their religious mix. Their village felt like a campground with elevated wood and bamboo bungalows among groves of betel nut palm. The people listened to the recording with interest since the message was in their own heart language. "The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation!" We prayed with a dozen adults who chose to receive Christ. It was wonderful to see whole families coming to Christ.
At the home of a government official, the whole family gathered in the main room of the house to hear the Gospel cassette. Without hesitation they accepted the invitation to receive salvation. The wife said she was angry at the witchdoctor and was fed up with offering cows and hens for the healing of her children's illnesses. Before I could finish talking, the father and mother began praying. It was moving to see their hearts softened and the father leading his family in confession of sin. I looked and the small daughter was praying and wiping away tears. I was so deeply touched.
AFRICA: Soldiers impacted by tapes and flipcharts
We presented gospel cassettes accompanied by flipchart display pictures. Many sat riveted as the tape recorder proclaimed the Gospel message and Bible stories in Arabic. The soldiers couldn't get enough of them, especially the stories of valor and victory by mighty men of God in the Bible. These cassette players and flipcharts are an incredible, effective means of reaching out to people and discipling them. I cannot describe the awe and wonder on people's faces as they sat and listened to Bible stories in their own language and saw it visually depicted in pictures.
MIDDLE EAST: Muslim Neighbor Girl Finds Christ
When one of our recordists finished editing an Arabic tape, she made a cassette copy and gave it to the language helper to take home and listen. When he arrived home, he mentioned to his neighbor that he had made a cassette tape. The neighbor immediately wanted to hear it. The language helper, being tired, handed him the tape and then went home to bed.
The next morning when returning his tape, the neighbor's teenage daughter told the language helper that she had also listened to the tape and believed what it said about Jesus. She now wanted to become a Christian!
This girl is just one of many whose life has been impacted this year by hearing the gospel in the heart language. Many people are now following the King of kings.
AFRICA: The Story of Ashtar
Ashtar was not feeling well. For some time she had a swelling under her arm. It was becoming increasingly difficult for her to grind her millet. She did not realize that she was dying of cancer. There was no medicine at the hospital and all we could give her was aspirin. As her health declined, we brought her food and a cassette player that spoke in the local Arabic.
Ashtar was from a large tribe called the Massalite in Chad. She had never been to school and realized that being born a girl in a Muslim country, she was worth only one third the value of a man. She had to work since she was five, was married before she was fourteen and was now a widow. Her only son was in his teens. When her husband was alive he probably reminded her that the prophet said, "Hell was created for women!" What hope had she of paradise?
As she listened to the message on the cassette, something touched her heart. It taught her of a Prophet who had come to tell her that God loved her. He had angered the self-righteous religious people and He cared for women! She lay back and listened without really understanding. But as she listened to the messages over and over again she started to grasp what was being said. Light came into her heart. She heard words that in the midst of pain were peace to her. Her son on his visits was amazed. He saw a dying woman but she had no fear. His mother radiated peace.
We were away at a conference when Ashtar died. On our return we heard that she had refused to say the Muslim declaration on her deathbed, as was the custom. She had declared instead that she believed in Jesus the Christ.
As a consequence, her mouth was stuffed with dirt and her body was buried in an unmarked grave. Not even her son knew where. However, there is a Massalite woman in heaven with the Lord, because of God's grace and two missionaries with a Gospel Recordings cassette.
